The good thing about visiting Berlin and Warsaw together, is that both are historically and spiritually interlinked. From the Nazi regime, to the World War II and the Hollocaust, one has inflicted tremendous pain on the other, while Berlin had its own share of atrocities and suffering too during the Cold War. Despite the modernity, progress and total restructure of both Capitals, they still carry the wounds of the Past, and haunted by a distressful memory which went hidden, but never forgotten. |
Nevertheless, there are much more to discover in both cities than the remains of wars and conflicts. Berlin has an incomparable vibrant nightlife and cultural events which you will enjoy too. You will always find on your way a fancy street cafe or an exotic restaurant to stop by and enjoying watching the crowd coming and going. The city has one of the best transportation system in Europe, not to mention that it's much cheaper than other capitals like Paris and London, while offering the same quality of services. Since I like to collect small souvernirs from each country I visit, I have to say the souvernirs shops in Berlin are one of the best, so don't forget to buy a small chunk of the Berlin Wall. And here's where you will shop till you drop, as some brands are not available in other cities of Europe and at affordable prices.
Warsaw on the opposite, is much quieter, but the Old Town is where you can spend hours and hours without getting bored. Stopping by a sweet shop, eating an ice cream by the Mermaid, and sitting in cosy Eastern European restaurants. I was lucky to make this trip end of April, beginning of May when the weather was just perfect, very sunny and warm. It coincided also with the Polish National Day and many celebrations, concerts and folk dances were all over the city.
